About this skill

Complete the multiplication grid

Use the multiplication grid to practice multiplying numbers quickly. The grid helps you recognize multiplication patterns as you learn the facts.

There are two modes: fill in one missing product at a row and column intersection, or complete the entire grid. Start with one blank and gradually increase your speed. Short, regular practice sessions help you answer more quickly and confidently.

Once you are familiar with the multiplication grid, build fluency with multiplication fact practice.

A multiplication grid, also called a Pythagorean table, helps you find products quickly. The grid is arranged as follows:

  • The factors appear along the top and down the side.
  • Each cell contains the product of its row and column factors.

The grid lets you find products at a glance and develop calculation skills without a calculator.

Although the grid is named after Pythagoras, there is no direct evidence that he created it. Nicomachus of Gerasa presented the table in its familiar form in his work “Introduction to Arithmetic”.

In Russia, the multiplication table first appeared in a 1682 textbook titled “Convenient Calculation”. It became widely known after appearing in Magnitsky’s textbook in 1703.
